RS-84

RS-84 Scope

RS-84 Sub Scale Model

  • The Oxygen Rich Staged Combustion (ORSC) engine cycle is being evaluated as part of the Next Generation Launch Technology (NGLT). RS-84 engine is a candidate propulsion system for the ORSC cycle. The RS-84 utilizes liquid oxygen and RP-1 as propellants. The RS-84 will be designed to be 65% throttleable, have a 100 cycle life at the full powerlevel condition, while exhibiting low maintenance. Key components of the RS-84 engine system are the subscale oxygen-rich (Ox-rich) preburner and the main injector using LOX/RP-1 propellants. A key objective is to demonstrate operational characteristics of oxygen rich staged combustion subsystem to reduce risk for full scale design and development. A full-scale "Battleship" Preburner will be designed and tested at E1 after the sub-scale testing.
RS-84 Status
SSC E2 Cell 1 Test Facility
  • Facility and STE design activities are initiated.
  • Facility preparations for initial phase of testing (preburner only) began in Nov 02.
  • Testing for preburner is scheduled for Jul 03.
  • The second phase of testing (preburner and main injector) is scheduled for Apr 04
  • Full Scale Battleship Preburner testing at E1 to begin in early CY05.
